NEXT PHASE OF WEST DOWNTOWN TRUCKEE REVITALIZATION
By Greyson Howard

Next Brickelltown workshop will be held on Wed, Dec. 2, 2009 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
The town is looking for public input once again as it hones in on plans for the western end of historic downtown.
Two previous workshops looked at plans for Brickelltown — which spans between the roundabout and Spring Street — at the conceptual level, weighing two options; keeping Donner Pass Road in place or moving it south toward the railroad to allow more parking in front of businesses

With some of the conceptual work well under way, the town is looking at what initially appears to be the rising costs of revitalizing Brickelltown.
In a number of public workshops, the town has been looking at two alternative options for improving the western end of downtown between the roundabout and Spring Street — shifting Donner Pass Road to the south, toward the railroad tracks, to bring more parking to the north side of the street, or keeping Donner Pass Road where it is and making other streetscape improvements.

The Truckee Town Council will get an update on the Brickelltown Streetscape project at their regular meeting on Nov. 5 and the public will also be given an opportunity to comment and provide feedback. Phase one of the project, which includes public involvement and the creation of preliminary designs for the corridor extending from Spring Street to the McIver roundabout, was authorized by the council in July at a cost of $429,000.

Updated 05.29.10:
The Railroad Museum had it's official Opening May 8, 2010 during National Railroad Day. See it coming down the tracks to one of the Sierra Nevada's most beloved railroad towns — Truckee. Aptly housed in an old Southern Pacific Railroad caboose that was once used in the area, the 300-square-foot Truckee Railroad Museum is slated to open its doors (maybe) this winter. The facility is now located next to the train depot and the California Welcome Center in the heart of Truckee's historic downtown.

UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD NEEDS CONVINCING ON MOUSEHOLE
By Greyson Howard
Published in the Sierra Sun, Thursday, November 26, 2009
TRUCKEE — Union Pacific Railroad officials aren't on board with plans to create a pedestrian tunnel at the Mousehole undercrossing, but town planners think they can change their minds.
The Town of Truckee and Caltrans have been working together for years on a safe way to get pedestrians and cyclists through the Highway 89 south undercrossing of the railroad tracks, known as the Mousehole. The preferred solution they've landed on is a separate tunnel to the east with a trail connecting the sidewalk opposite Deerfield Drive to West River Street.
