John Corbett's photos.  Please see our June 2016 Newsletter for the article about John Corbett.  Please note that the Corbett collection contains some 10,000 - 35 mm (and assorted medium) negatives, not prints.

To see what the "License Plate" garage looks like today in May 2016, and a restored gasoline pump located behind the Chinese Herb Garden.   For photos taken the day of the dedication of Hooligan Rock, October 11, 1997, see Hooligan Rock Plaque, Hooligan Rock Plaque with Nona McGlashan and Lee Shegg.  Here is another image we found in the Joseph Collection that shows what Hooligan Rock and Garden - and the Gateway Cabins looked like before the development of the shopping area.

Map to accompany article on ESSEX.  California State Automobile Association (1946). Note ESSEX is on the Nevada - California State line just west and a little south of Reno. Click anywhere on the map below to see a close up of the location of ESSEX.

More information on Essex
* While reviewing a document entitled The California Highway Commission and the Truckee River Route - Nevada Historical Society Quarterly, Fall 1974, which we used as a reference in our last March 2016 ECHOES, we noticed that there is a reference to this same now abandoned town, Essex; see p. 157
* Similarly, when we were recently granted access to reviewing over century-old Truckee Lumber Company (TLC) records held at the Donner Memorial State Park, we also came upon ledger books for TLC and noticed that Essex Mill Co. held an account; December 13, 1889 TLC ledger account for Essex Mill Co., p. 99
* While reviewing original Truckee Lumber Company records from 1889 - 1890 that are held at the Gatekeeper's Museum in Tahoe City, we also came across references to Essex Mill Co. invoices as well

We Would Love to Have You Visit Soon!  Please stop by the Joseph Research Library Cabin most Thursdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. where our volunteers are hard at work.
