The fate of the SS TRUCKEE - 1897 HCS 9/1/2019 - photos better resolution
Our readers are always interested in updates to articles that have appeared in prior Echoes From the Past newsletters. Our current Truckee-Donner Historical Society President was fortunate enough to visit the Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum in Winchester Bay, Oregon, this August and returned with some spectacular photographs about the SS TRUCKEE. Recall that that the ship was caught in a fierce gale on 18 November 1897 off the Umpqua bar. (See our two earlier articles about the SS TRUCKEE: September 2015, p. 5; and December 2018, pp. 13-14.)
In our September 2015 Echoes newsletter article, we recounted the storm and what happened that fateful night, but we did not have photographs of any item that may have survived the wreck. Researching, we did find evidence that a “table” was rescued from the SS TRUCKEE, but at the time of the prior articles, we did not have a photograph. We hope you enjoy these. Thank you Katie!
